Wood Planer

If you looking for information on a wood planer, you should be aware that a wood jointer is virtually the same thing so you may find a jointer when you search for a wood planer. This tool is used on wood because most wood will warp and bend in the drying process. Woodworkers need flat straight boards to use in the building process and no matter how good their carpentry tools are, if the wood is not straight and flat, it can seldom be used. So a carpenter or woodworker would typically start with a rough board of wood and using tools like the planer, would start to make the raw stock flat. You don't have to use a power wood tool at this stage, and some woodworkers will just use a manual hand plane. A power planer will make this a much faster operation, though. It only takes a couple of runs with a powered planer to make the sides of the board flat. The wide side of the board is a different story. This is where a heavier powered wood planer really shines. This is usually called a thickness planer, and this tool can actually thin the board down to whatever thickness is needed for the job. It has a cutting head that spins very fast and is at least the width of the board.

The board is usually fed into the head with rollers that keep a tight pinch on the board.

At each pass through the machine , more material is taken off. After you complete this operation , you are left with a board that is both flat a parallel. At this stage , the board is often planed on the sides again by a jointer. The final process may be done to square both ends with a common table saw.
